Black's focus is an offensive on the e4 pawn.
The usual way of assault is ... Bd7, ... Nxd4,
and ... Bc6, together with an ... e5 break.
The advance ... e5 fixes the target in place.
It also threatens an exchange on f4, after
which the e-file is half open and available
for pressure against e4.
